SCLoA Outcome Link: Explain the formation of stereotypes and their effect on behaviour (the perception of leadership qualities)
Only until recently, I have been constantly confused with the progress of my Extended Essay. I knew I wanted to do something to do with leadership, because that is what I do and want to be: a leader! I wasn't too sure how to approach the essay. For example, I started off with a title something along the lines of "To what extent do nonverbal cues enhance leadership", and then I went on to "What nonverbal cues make a successful leader?". I focused on nonverbal cues because quite obviously, psychology is all about the implicit meanings behind everything. I was not going to analyze the policies a politician wanted to implement for a psychology EE. However, I felt that there were too many studies and the question was too broad: do I talk about eye contact, stance, hand gestures... Are there even any studies that aim to analyze if a certain hand gesture gives people the impression of a good leader? There were many studies that were moderately relevant: for example, the eye contact, sitting position, and facial expression of someone could affect the approachability of an individual. If my essay was on how one could be more approachable, this would be perfect. However, I felt it was too much to link approachability, among other characteristics of a leader, back to these studies. There just wasn't a psychological study that showed approachability is a quality of a leader. It just seemed intuitive, that a leader should be approachable. As such, I ended up really lost and slowed down on my progress.
BUT! Having been engrossed into the coming November US elections, I had a thought: what if I studied one of those leaders? Without a doubt, Trump was the presidential candidate who had the most media coverage. His outrageous and ridiculous statements have landed him the front-runner of the Republican Party. WAIT WHAT? How does that work? Doesn't everyone know that he is an extreme sexist and sexist? EVEN IF he were to be one deep down inside but not vocalize it globally, affecting younger generations and promoting a society of hate and fear; his right to such a powerful position is DEBATABLE. But, that is not the case! Yet, somehow, by some sort of miracle, he is succeeding! Through this confusion, I have come up with the question "Trump: To What Extent Does Narcissism Effect Leadership?" This is because having read hundreds of articles, I believe it is his facade, some form of deceit where narcissism is portrayed and perceived as good leadership, that gets him so many votes. I will be working on my EE on this topic and I'll show you all very soon!
